I’ve never had a problem with the term Mocktail and I’ve always been confused why it’s such a lightning rod. It’s a perfectly functional and understandable name for this genre of drink.
I think it serves the same straw man function that things like vodka did for the early cocktail movement. There's a reasonable disagreement to be stated regarding terminology but, instead of approaching that position with curiosity, we just start hacking away at an extreme position until we mellow with age or someone offers us enough money to change our opinion, hahaha.
Well, ok. I see your point. But I also hate the term, to me it implies inferiority. I should probably go read John’s article next though.
